Where to find fonts you can legally sell with
The trap that catches new sellers: a font being free to download does not mean it is free to sell with. Commercial use is a separate permission, and using a font outside its licence can get a listing pulled or worse. Here is where to find fonts you can genuinely sell with, and how to check.
Good places to look
Stick to sources that state the licence plainly:
- Open-source font libraries where fonts carry an open licence that permits commercial use. These are the safest default.
- Reputable font marketplaces, where you buy a clearly worded commercial or extended licence.
- Foundry websites, buying directly from the designer with the licence spelled out.
Avoid random "free fonts" dumps and repost sites. They often strip the original licence, so you cannot prove what you are allowed to do.
How to read a font licence
Before you use a font in anything you sell, check three things:
- Does it allow commercial use at all, or only personal or educational.
- What counts as your use. Selling a finished printable is different from selling a font, or embedding it in an editable template a buyer can retype.
- Attribution and limits. Some licences require credit or cap seats, downloads or products.
Keep a copy of the licence text with your files, so future-you can prove it.
The template trap
The riskiest case is a buyer-editable template (a Canva or editable-PDF file) where the buyer types their own text in your font. Many licences that cover a flat printable do not cover that. If you sell editable products, confirm the licence allows font embedding for end users, or use an open-licensed font that does.
